Course

Clinicians may be familiar with recent discussions of transgender experiences and approaches to care. But what has happened in recent years in terms of trends in both gender identity and care for minors?

In this workshop we will discuss emerging gender identities, such as gender non-binary, genderqueer, gender creative, and gender expansive experiences, as well as controversies in care for youth today, such as the use of puberty blockers, medical transition, and late-onset cases.

We will also discuss considerations for counseling conventionally religious youth and their families as we strive for what is best practice when working with youth navigating potential conflicts related to gender identity and religious faith.

Also discussed, how to educate others within an educational or religious setting who may not be familiar with transgender and non-binary experiences of gender identity.

Learning Objectives

  1. Name and describe three explanatory frameworks for understanding gender identity, transgender experiences, and emerging gender identities.
  2. Identify three areas of current controversy in care for minors.
  3. Assess religiosity/spirituality when working with conventionally religious families in which a young person identifies as transgender, gender non-binary, or is otherwise reporting a conflict between their gender identity and their religious faith.
  4. Assess gender identity when working with a young person who identifies as transgender, gender non-binary, or is otherwise reporting a conflict between their gender identity and their religious faith.
  5. Educate others within a young person’s educational and religious setting who may not be familiar with transgender and non-binary experiences.
